LIGHTERS 101: BUTANE LIGHTER MAINTENANCE
BUTANE LIGHTER MAINTENANCE
Butane lighters can be tricky to operate properly. Lighter mechanics and the challenges of dealing with pressurized gas require a little extra care and attention. The most important part of maintaining a reliable butane lighter is to fill it properly and keep the flame head (or burner) clean.
First, adjust the flame dial to the lowest possible setting.
The next and most important step to properly refilling a butane lighter is to PURGE it. Purging gets rid of excess oxygen which remains in the gas tank. All refillable butane lighters have a valve on the bottom that works like a tire valve. Before refilling the lighter, you must push the ”tire” like valve IN to purge/evacuate the excess gas and oxygen. The excess oxygen and residual gas left inside will seep out and make a “hissing” sound. By using a match stick or small screwdriver, you can repeatedly push the valve in until you cannot hear any more air escaping. PURGING will empty the lighter’s reservoir tank and ensure a clean and undiluted refill.
To FILL your lighter with butane, first turn the lighter and butane upside down. Then gently mate the butane can with the lighter valve. Push the butane can down for approximately 5 seconds or until the lighter will not accept any more gas.
In addition to proper filling, it is imperative to keep the flame head/burner CLEANand free of ash and debris. Regular cleaning can be accomplished with an air burst from your mouth or a compressed air duster. When using a compressed air duster, make sure you don’t ignite the lighter as the contents of the air duster may be flammable and dangerous.
BUTANE
DO NOT USE CHEAP BUTANE!!!
Butane is a natural gas product, made from petroleum, that is flavorless and ideal for lighting luxury tobacco products. The best butane is filtered several times for optimal purity. Inferior butane will clog or corrupt a quality lighter; so buying the best is requisite. butane is sold pressurized in various sizes and containers, so it is best to match the brand of butane with the lighter you need to refill.
Maduro 101…. Everthing you need to know about Maduro Cigars
MADURO

Maduro is the Spanish term for ripe; meaning fully developed. A maduro cigar is characterized by its dark wrapper, typically black or close to it.
In its most limited sense, the term maduro can refer to the color of a wrapper leaf, where the darker shade is oscuro. A leaf can end up darker if it comes from a late priming or a stalk-cut plant which is intentionally harvested to produce darker leaves: (see broadleaf)
A true maduro cigar will have a wrapper which has undergone a longer and/or more intense (higher temperature) fermentation. The specific times and temperatures will vary from one cigar maker to another. This ‘enhanced’ fermentation releases the natural sugars of the leaf, which produces a “sweeter” flavor. In addition, the extra fermentation will round out the spices in the leaf and make it richer in flavor.
Until recently, maduros have not been produced in Cuba. The extra care taken to transform the leaf produces a style of cigar that is popular in the United States. Usually, maduro cigars cost more due to the extra time and care needed to create them. Some cigar makers may try to speed up the fermentation process by adding heat, extra moisture, or pressure to the tobacco. In addition, less honorable cigar manufacturers will artificially color their leaves with dyes to create a visual appeal. Obviously this is disingenuous since premium cigar smokers expect a natural product produced through traditional methods. Fermentation is a natural process which should not be expedited. Any method of speeding up production may produce an attractive dark cigar, but it will not have the flavor profile of a legitimate maduro. Ultimately, the darkest, blackest maduro will probably not be the best.

Most annoying words used in casual conversation.
It’s that time of the year, again! It’s time for The Marist Poll to reveal the word or phrase considered to be the most annoying in casual conversation. And, for the third consecutive year, “whatever” receives the dubious honor. Nearly four in ten adults nationally — 38% — say “whatever” grates on their nerves the most. “Like” one in five — 20% — say that verbal filler is the most irritating while 19% despise “you know.” “Just sayin’” gets on the nerves of 11% of the population compared with 7% who report “seriously” should be banned from casual conversation. Five percent are unsure.

How to fill and trouble shoot a butane lighter.
How to Troubleshoot a Butane Lighter
-
-
1
Make sure to use premium fuel. If it doesn’t say double, triple or quadruple refined… DO NOT USE IT! It will clog up your lighter.
- 2
Turn the flame setting up or clean the burner if the butane lighter creates a spark but will not create a full flame. Move the flame adjuster toward the “+” sign to turn up the setting. If this does not work, the burner may be clogged; clean it with a blast of compressed air. If neither of these methods works, you may be low on butane or may have an air bubble in the lighter’s tank. The only way to definitively solve either problem is by emptying the lighter and refilling it with fresh butane.
- 3
Refill the lighter if the flame grows without being adjusted, or if the flame gets very short. The butane lighter is low on fluid and needs a refill. Refill it according to the butane instructions.
- 4
Replace the flint or return the lighter if the lighter will not spark. If you just purchased the butane lighter and it doesn’t work, return it to the store and ask for a replacement. If the lighter has a flint, the flint has run out and needs to be replaced. Replace it according to your lighter’s directions.
- 5
Decrease the flame adjustment at higher altitudes and increase it at lower altitudes. A sporadic flame or inconsistent function may be due to altitude changes. It may take a few tries to determine the best setting for the altitude.
- 6
Turn down the flame adjuster if the lighter makes a hissing sound. The flame setting may be too high. If the sound continues, the hissing noise means that the lighter is leaking. It will need to be fixed by a professional. Take it in for service before using it again.
