Fillers

The majority of a cigar is made up of fillers, wrapped-up bunches of leaves inside the wrapper. Fillers of various strengths are usually blended to produce desired cigar flavors. In the cigar industry this is referred to as a “blend”. Many cigar manufacturers pride themselves in constructing the perfect blend(s) that will give the smoker the most enjoyment. The more oils present in the tobacco leaf, the stronger (less dry) the filler. Types range from the minimally flavored Volado taken from the bottom of the plant, through the light-flavored Seco (dry) taken from the middle of the plant, to the strong Ligero from the upper leaves exposed to the most sunlight. Fatter cigars of larger gauge hold more filler, with greater potential to provide a full body and complex flavor. However, this effect can be diminished because of the generally poorer burn characteristics of thicker cigars (greater than 50 ring gauge), and the fact that these cigars burn cooler. This can prevent the full spectrum of flavors from being easily detectable. When used, Ligero is always folded into the middle of the filler because it burns slowly.

Fillers can be either long or short; long filler uses whole leaves and is of a better quality, while short filler, also called “mixed”, uses chopped leaves, stems, and other bits. Recently some manufacturers have created what they term “medium filler” cigars. They use larger pieces of leaf than short filler without stems, and are of better quality than short filler cigars. Short filler cigars are easy to identify when smoked since they often burn hotter and tend to release bits of leaf into the smoker’s mouth. Long filled cigars of high quality should burn evenly and consistently. Also available is a filler called “sandwich” (sometimes “Cuban sandwich”) which is a cigar made by rolling short leaf inside long outer leaf. If a cigar is completely constructed (filler, binder and wrapper) of tobacco from only one country, it is referred to in the cigar industry as a “puro” which in Spanish means “pure.”

Binders

Binders are elastic leaves used to hold together the bunches of fillers. Essentially, binders are wrappers that are rejected because of holes, blemishes, discoloration, or excess veins.

Wrappers

A cigar’s outermost leaves, or wrapper, come from the widest part of the plant. The wrapper determines much of the cigar’s character and flavor, and as such its color is often used to describe the cigar as a whole. Over 100 wrapper shades are identified by manufacturers, but the seven most common classifications are as follows, from lightest to darkest:

In general, dark wrappers add a touch of sweetness, while light ones add a hint of dryness to the taste

Box Pressed Cigars Explained

Written by jeff on January 3, 2012 - 0 Comments
cigar factory, cigar rolling, cigars, Uncategorized

“Box-pressed” or “square-pressed” cigars are cigars are literally “pressed” into their factory box, whereby the pressure from the box creates a square shape. Originating in Cuba, this was done to save shipping space. As a result, the process causes the cigars to burn longer and with a more consistent flavor, giving the smoker a more enjoyable smoke.

Square-pressed and “factory pressed” cigars are also made by using molds.

LIGHTERS 101: BUTANE LIGHTER MAINTENANCE

Written by jeff on December 26, 2011 - 0 Comments
lighters

BUTANE LIGHTER MAINTENANCE

Butane lighters can be tricky to operate properly.  Lighter mechanics and the challenges of dealing with pressurized gas require a little extra care and attention.  The most important part of maintaining a reliable butane lighter is to fill it properly and keep the flame head (or burner) clean.

First, adjust the flame dial to the lowest possible setting.

The next and most important step to properly refilling a butane lighter is to PURGE it.  Purging gets rid of excess oxygen which remains in the gas tank.  All refillable butane lighters have a valve on the bottom that works like a tire valve.  Before refilling the lighter, you must push the ”tire” like valve IN to purge/evacuate the excess gas and oxygen.  The excess oxygen and residual gas left inside will seep out and make a “hissing” sound.  By using a match stick or small screwdriver, you can repeatedly push the valve in until you cannot hear any more air escaping. PURGING will empty the lighter’s reservoir tank and ensure a clean and undiluted refill.

To FILL your lighter with butane, first turn the lighter and butane upside down.  Then gently mate the butane can with the lighter valve.  Push the butane can down for approximately 5 seconds or until the lighter will not accept any more gas.

In addition to proper filling, it is imperative to keep the flame head/burner CLEANand free of ash and debris.  Regular cleaning can be accomplished with an air burst from your mouth or a compressed air duster.  When using a compressed air duster, make sure you don’t ignite the lighter as the contents of the air duster may be flammable and dangerous.

BUTANE

DO NOT USE CHEAP BUTANE!!!

Butane is a natural gas product, made from petroleum, that is flavorless and ideal for lighting luxury tobacco products.  The best butane is filtered several times for optimal purity.  Inferior butane will clog or corrupt a quality lighter; so buying the best is requisite.  butane is sold pressurized in various sizes and containers, so it is best to match the brand of butane with the lighter you need to refill.

Maduro 101…. Everthing you need to know about Maduro Cigars

Written by jeff on December 22, 2011 - 0 Comments
cigar rolling, cigars, how to, Uncategorized

MADURO

Maduro is the Spanish term for ripe; meaning fully developed.  A maduro cigar is characterized by its dark wrapper, typically black or close to it.

In its most limited sense, the term maduro can refer to the color of a wrapper leaf, where the darker shade is oscuro.  A leaf can end up darker if it comes from a late priming or a stalk-cut plant which is intentionally harvested to produce darker leaves: (see broadleaf)

A true maduro cigar will have a wrapper which has undergone a longer and/or more intense (higher temperature) fermentation. The specific times and temperatures will vary from one cigar maker to another.  This ‘enhanced’ fermentation releases the natural sugars of the leaf, which produces a “sweeter” flavor.  In addition, the extra fermentation will round out the spices in the leaf and make it richer in flavor.

Until recently, maduros have not been produced in Cuba.  The extra care taken to transform the leaf produces a style of cigar that is popular in the United States.  Usually, maduro cigars cost more due to the extra time and care needed to create them.  Some cigar makers may try to speed up the fermentation process by adding heat, extra moisture, or pressure to the tobacco.   In addition, less honorable cigar manufacturers will artificially color their leaves with dyes to create a visual appeal.   Obviously this is disingenuous since premium cigar smokers expect a natural product produced through traditional methods.  Fermentation is a natural process which should not be expedited.  Any method of speeding up production may produce an attractive dark cigar, but it will not have the flavor profile of a legitimate maduro.  Ultimately, the darkest, blackest maduro will probably not be the best.
